Cherokee is an active Main Street community. The Oklahoma Main Street Program is a downtown revitalization program administered by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

Cherokee is a Certified City.

Cherokee has received a Community Development Block Grant to inventory infrastructure features for Capital Improvement Planning (CIP).

Cherokee recently won recognition by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce for completion of Project 2002, a competition to improve parks.
