Atoka, Oklahoma is the county seat of Atoka County in the southeastern part of the state. Atoka is part of the Chickasha Nation. Technical training needs of businesses and area high schools are served by the Kiamichi Technology Center. Atoka is the site of Oklahoma's largest rock quarry, located near Stringtown, the birthplace of county music star, Reba McIntyre.
The area is a mix of forest and ranch lands, well known for outdoor recreation, particularly fishing. The town was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Stage Road, the route followed when mail service began between Missouri and San Francisco in 1875. Nearby Boggy Depot State Park marks the site of important trading area during territorial days.
Atoka was formerly a Certified City and has successfully transitioned to a Century Community.
Atoka has received a Community Development Block Grant to inventory infrastructure features for Capital Improvement Planning (CIP).
