Alva, Oklahoma is the county seat of Woods County in the northwestern part of the state. Alva is home to Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 90 minutes southwest of Wichita, Kansas. Nearby are the vast Great Salt Plains, the only place in the world to find hourglass, selenite crystals.
The Great Salt Plains and National Wildlife Refuge provide essential wetlands habitat for vast waterfowl migrations. Whooping Crane and other rare and endangered species can be easily viewed during fall and spring migrations, when the weather is mild and sunny.
